mib – the consultancy for sustainable mobility – is leaving the consultancy market

Dear customers and partners of the Mobility Institute Berlin,
Dear all those passionate about the sustainable mobility transformation,

We regret to inform you that the Mobility Institute Berlin (mib) will be discontinuing its regular consulting business.

Having started almost 6 years ago with the very earnest, idealistic and at the same time extremely ambitious claim to “revolutionize public transport”, this decision was not easy for us.

In our view, the time was ripe to inspire key decision-makers to think “bigger, more visionary and more user-oriented” in order to create a much more attractive public transport system that motivates people to switch from cars to buses and trains, thus making a significant contribution to improving quality of life and protecting the climate.

With this goal in mind and the opportunity to help shape the massive expansion of public transport in Hamburg, Torben Greve and four colleagues founded mib in 2018, having previously successfully built up MeinFernbus and created a Europe-wide long-distance bus network together with FlixBus.

Since then, we have worked hard with a diverse team of over 20 experts in the fields of strategic consulting, data analysis and communication to drive forward ambitious mobility transition projects in cities, municipalities and transport companies. In our work, we have repeatedly noticed that there is a great need for “real” mobility transformation projects throughout Germany.

Nevertheless, it is with a heavy heart that we have decided to close down our consulting business at the end of January 2024 and no longer accept any new projects. There are two main reasons behind this decision:

Firstly, even 6 years after our founding, we have not managed to run our business profitably. On the one hand, the budgets available and the procurement practices of public sector clients often did not match our approach of developing tailor-made concepts for each individual project and involving all key decision-makers closely in the process.

On the other hand, we had to realize that – despite numerous very motivating and inspiring exceptions – the majority of players in the public transport sector and transport policy are “tired of change”. “Real transformation”, which always encounters a certain amount of resistance and in some cases requires completely new approaches, is often not even conceivable or desired in our industry.

In this respect, the discontinuation of our consulting business is a logical decision, but also a sad one. We are parting ways with our great team, in which each and every one of us has worked with a great deal of passion, energy and optimism on the shared vision of a better (mobility) future.

We are saying goodbye with sadness, but also with a great deal of pride in what we have achieved together over the past few years: 53 mobility transformation projects in almost every major city in Germany, a major industry event on the topic of “Visions for Urban Mobility”, high-profile publications, numerous lectures and panel discussions on the latest topics and much more.

While the majority of our team will be embarking on new paths from February 2024, our founder and Managing Director Torben Greve will continue to be available as an innovator and advisor for transport politicians and top public transport executives for those occasions when “thinking big, innovative and ambitious” is explicitly desired.

We would like to thank all our customers, partners and supporters who have accompanied us on our journey.
