Community Crosswalks Seattle
Colourful zebra crossings can be seen all over the world. For example, Seattle recently added 40 so-called Community Crosswalks. As local art displays, permanent features or a rainbow to draw attention to the LGBTQ movement – they are definitely an eye-catcher.
The Seattle Transport department sums it up: “The crosswalks showcase a community’s unique culture and history or just liven up an intersection with artistic and colorful stripes.” Seattle established a “Neighborhood Matching Fund” where interested parties can apply for support.
Whether the attention that colourful pedestrian crossings draw to themselves is good or bad is a controversial topic. The line between distraction and increased caution is narrow. The City of Edmonton has found that the installed rainbow strips are not dangerous and promote more sensible traffic behaviour.
